President Muhammadu Youssouf of Niger Republic has been appointed as ECOWAS authority of heads of state and government new chairman.
He succeeds President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria. The election was part of the formalities for the 55th ordinary session of ECOWAS which was declared open in Abuja on Saturday by the Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari.

During the opening session, President Muhammadu Buhari commiserated the families that fell victim of terrorism, banditry and inter-communal clashes caused by some misguided people within the region.
He affirms that the ECOWAS will not faint or relent to protect its peace-loving people and their properties, while rigorously sustaining the war against terrorism and criminals.
