The Economic Community Of West African States has disagreed with President Muhammad Buhari over the closure of the Nigerian border to curb smuggling.
The community, however, said the development wouldn’t prevent smuggling of goods from neighbouring countries into Nigeria.
President Muhammadu Buhari had said, his aim was to stop the smuggling of goods and products illegally to Nigeria and outside as well, adding that it will be an advantage to promoting locally made products.
Contrary to his opinion, ECOWAS believe it would affect the Africa Continental Free Trade Area Act implementation signed by the country.
“The ECOWAS Parliament calls for compliance with community provisions and the reopening of borders and a coordinated fight against smuggling in the region.”
It believes that the cause of this issue must be studied and find a solution to rather than taking actions that won’t solve the problem.
