Yahaya Abdullahi | Senate leader

The Nigeria Senate has condemned the outcry of Nigerians over planned purchased of SUVs worth N5.5bn for senators on Wednesday and termed the cry as an insult.

Yahaya Abdullahi, who is the Senate leader, claimed that the level of a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is deserved SUV and even more.

According to him, all the 109 senators in the upper chamber would be given one SUV each, of which at the end of their four-year legislative tenure, it would be paid for.

“Senators have a lot of task and burdens on them, so compensating them with an SUV isn’t a bad idea,” he said.

He further said, “I was a permanent secretary. I know what ministers get; we cannot even compare ourselves to ministers because we are higher than the minister(s).

For you to say that a senator of the Federal Republic cannot drive a jeep today — come on, that is an insult.”

He also said the people should have it in mind that what they do is far more than the work of the ministers.
