NIHSA Raise Flood Alarm As Rivers, Niger, Benue Rise

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency on Monday has announced that many states in the country will experience flooding due to the rapid increase water level of River Niger and River Benue, Nigeria major rivers. 

The NIHSA is an agency under the Federal Government of Nigeria responsible for monitoring major rivers in Nigeria as well as the river Niger and Benue, at the trans-boundary.

The agency reported the latest information gathered from the headquarters of the Niger Basin Authority in Niamey, the Niger Republic, on September 6, 2019, was that there had been a rapid increase into the Red Alert Zone up to 6.26 metres of the flood level of River Niger monitored in Niamey.

According to Clement Nze, the Director-General of NIHSA, “the grades for flood alerts were Yellow Alert, 5.5m to 5.8m; Orange Alert, 5.8m to 6.2m; and Red Alert, 6.2m and above.
