The Senate has praised president Muhammad Buhari over his decision to close the land border temporary with the belief in tackling smuggling, and its effect on the country’s economy.
The appraisal came following a motion of consideration themed: “The impact of border closure on the Nigerian economy”, which was sponsored by Senator Adamu Aliero (APC, Kebbi Central) during the Wednesday’s plenary.
Though some of the senators during the debate asked the Federal government to be conscious of the effect of the closure on Nigerians.
The Senate in its climax urged the Nigerian Customs Service and security services to put more effort in the curbing of smuggling across the borders and promised them of the upper chamber’s support in their difficult task of ridding Nigeria of smuggled goods and services.
Senator Aliero who led the debate said, “The smuggling of Fuel has drastically reduced which has saved the nation of billions of scarce foreign exchange spent by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to bring fuel into Nigeria.”
“The action taken by the Federal Government has resulted to a renewal of local production of vegetable oil, and increased employment generation,” the senator added.
