If Education is the betterment of every Economy, why should schools and higher institutions be on restrictions while market and other sectors of the economy will be on operations?

The World Health Organization (WHO) on March 11, 2020, declared the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak a global pandemic (1). While Nigeria’s record her first case on the 27th of February 2020.

We students appreciate the effort of the government in curtailing the Corona Virus. All attempts to cure the virus or get the vaccine to prove abortive as announced by the WHO.

Avoiding social gathering such as religious gathering, parties, institutions, etc. All schools and tertiary institutions, mosques and churches, private and public companies and other sectors as well were closed since 23rd March 2020 in order to curtail the spread of the virus.

Funnily enough, a few days later, restriction on our markets was lifted which is the crowded open place ever, notwithstanding, the federal government of Nigeria announced on the 1st of June 2020 to open other sectors of the economy in the country while school and tertiary institutions are still on restrictions.

Market Square

The federal government should put it in mind that there are primary schools’ students preparing for Commons Entrance Examination, WAEC and NECO for the secondary schools’ students as well as tertiary institutions’ students are writing final semester exams before the outbreak coronavirus otherwise known as Covid-19, there are many final-year students that are supposed to be in NYSC Camp right now, there are a lot of students that are supposed to be rounding off within the period of the lockdown.

In addition, there are lots of students that live outside the school campus and have paid for their accommodation fee, if care is not taken, they have to pay for another rent if the lockdown persists.

I, therefore, urge the federal government to put all students into consideration as our future lies in their hand if truly, education is the betterment of every economy.

The federal government should launch an initiative as part of the plans to enable it to assess the level of readiness of the player in schools and tertiary institutions for supervised operations.

The federal government should, as a matter of urgency send guidelines to all schools and tertiary institutions on how precautions will be taken.

Academic activities can be rescheduled in such a way that subject offered in a day will be reduced. At the same time, there will be segmentation in classes and time, for instance, a class of 50 can be divided into two and 30mins can be used for 25 students and 30mins for remaining students as well as tertiary institutions where they use 2hours per course.
We urge the Federal government to put us into consideration as the widespread disease Covid-19 as affected schools and tertiary institutions academic activities
