ABUJA, NIGERIA — Omoyele Sowore has said President Muhammadu Buhari is not the first dictator in the history of Nigeria while also assured Nigerians that they will survive the Buhari’s regime.
The human rights activist and pro-democracy campaigner said this on Friday while answering the news media at the Magistrate Court in the Federal Capital, Abuja.
According to him, “we’ve survived Babangida, we’ve survived Abacha, we’ve survived Obasanjo, we’ve survived all kinds of the wicked regime and we will survive this one too”
The journalist-turned-politician is facing treason charges for organizing a nationwide protest tagged (#RevolutionNow) against the Nigeria government.
Nigeria has grown worse in its ranking on human rights violations since the Buhari administration came to power in 2015, according to CIVICUS, a human rights activist group.
Also last year, a popular Nigerian newspaper, PUNCH says it will now call President Buhari a ‘military dictator’ and his administration will be described as a regime.
“Until he and his repressive regime purge themselves of their martial tendency, therefore, PUNCH will not be a party to falsely adorning it with a democratic robe, hence our decision to label it for what it is — an autocratic military-style regime run by Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd),” the editorial said.
